i haven’t seen any noise about this on tumblr yet, but a fire has completely wiped out a small town in california.
they’re calling it the camp fire. over 20,000 residents have been evacuated so far, the last area estimates i heard were over an hour ago at 18,000 acres and its still zero percent contained.
this is the smoke from about 18 miles away from the fire three hours ago. if you know anyone near chico, paradise, oroville or durham california you might want to check they’re okay

the fire has completely walked over paradise, magalia, and much of the rest of butte county. it’s under 10% containment and moving towards chico, which was been mostly evacuated as well. it’s been documented as one of the top 20 deadliest fires seen in california. i know many of the people personally whose lives have been destroyed by this fire. my aunt and uncle’s home, of whom we’re very close to, was demolished last night, same goes for family friends and others who lived in paradise– which is completely gone. there are 5 confirmed deaths, several dozen missing people.

the majority of those affected by the fire in paradise were elderly people. and having known paradise and magalia myself for years, it’s not a wealthy part of california. these people will need help, and lots of it.

every time I use “they” to refer to a single gender-unknown person on Tumblr, another piece of my grammar-filled heart shatters, and the pieces scatter at the bottom of hell
“They” has been a singular pronoun for hundreds of years, you melodramatic dipshit.
well… actually… no… they is plural. people use they when they should use he, she, or it.
dense motherfucker, the pronoun “they” is an english equivalent for the third person indefinite singular and has been for literally centuries. it remains morphologically and syntactically plural therefore you don’t need to shit your little pantaloons at compromising your surely rock solid grammar rules.
i guarantee every fuckin time you’ve ever had to refer to a person of an unknown gender you’ve used “they” subconsciously. (“The post clerk gave me a message for you.” “Oh, what did they say?”) but you only have a problem with it when people specify it as a pronoun for themselves because you’re a shitlord i fuckin guess.

Seriously it’s been in use as a singular pronoun since 1375 at least, and that was in a written work meaning colloquial use was definitely happening some time earlier, so y’all need to stop acting like it’s a recent invention that violates grammar and language (Which uh, evolves and changes over time anyways to suite existing needs because that is what languages do and acting all high and mighty about it not only makes you look like a fool, but shows you fundamentally failed to grasp the entire purpose of language as a tool.)
tl;dr Singular they has been correct grammar for over 700 years and even if it wasn’t, language and words evolve, and you can either realize that or go back to speaking olde english and stop using the word ‘you’ which is more recent than singular they is.
I’ve been saving up screen caps of the singular “they” being used for a few weeks now and will eventually make a post of them.
We use the singular “they” all the time when talking about someone whose gender we don’t know, whose gender is unimportant, or whose gender we want to conceal. Why the hell can’t we use it for people who don’t relate to being called a “he” or a “she”? I hate it when grammar snobs decide to make this their hill to die upon, despite the fact that I can absolutely guarantee you that they’ve used it multiple times in their lives for a variety of reasons. -V
