ok so theories like this one definitely make a lot of sense, but the one thing that i was still confused about was this:
the fact that the birdcage is rusty and has “seen quite a few crashes” plus the fact that it’s the only thing in kris’s room clearly indicates that it’s there for a specific purpose, and that they’ve used it for that purpose several times.
I was confused about this in relation to the “kris was ripping us out and seizing control” theories because we only started controlling them the morning before the end of the game. it wouldnt make sense for them to have used the birdcage a bunch of times before if the events of the game were the first time they had ever been possessed.
so i was thinking, what if we aren’t the only ones controlling them? what if this was something that had happened periodically through kris’s life, and we’re just the most recent on a long list of possessors?
i’m not quite sure exactly how that would work, or what the in-universe explanation for that would be, but i feel like it would make a lot of sense
it would explain the ending. if being possessed and having their body taken control of by an exterior force was something that kris had experienced many times before, they would be prepared for it and know what to do. when they take out the knife and look directly at us, they’re intending to go to the birdcage and stab the soul, permanently getting rid of us so that they can regain their agency. the bloodstain next to the birdcage is from the other times they’ve done this.
i really really don’t think kris is evil. it’s a really interesting dynamic to have the main character of a game despise the person who’s playing the game, but if you think about it, they aren’t doing anything wrong. they’re just trying to stay in control of their own body. at the end, when they hold the knife out, they’re threatening us. they were never going to hurt anyone else.
