geegee-wellplayed:

It’s that time of year again, a new hero is coming out soon in Overwatch, which means that some black women are hoping for a black woman hero and racist gamers are being rude and aggressive about it. Lets clear some things up:

  • “Black woman” is not some unreasonable combination of identities to hope for
  • Even though Egypt is in Africa, there is a high population of Arabic people, and the Amaris are implied to be ethnically Arabic, not black
  • Symmetra isn’t coded as black either, not every dark-skinned person is black, you’re just racist
  • Efi is not a playable character
  • Even though it is important and interesting to have female-coded robots (especially ones that aren’t sexualized) and African-coded robots, this still doesn’t make Orisa a black woman. Human black women exist, you don’t have to make robots the only representation
  • Lucio is black, even though he’s from Brazil. I don’t know why this comes up every time, but it does. Still not a black woman
  • There are multiple canon black Overwatch agents mentioned or pictured in the lore that could be easily added
  • Doomfist and Brigitte were added because of fan interest, so don’t pretend adding a black woman will wreck Michael Chu’s carefully planned out lore. (For that matter, don’t pretend he actually has a plan)
  • There’s a difference between headcanons and canon representation
  • There are six white women in the game
